Lectionary Reflection for the Second Sunday after Pentecost

This excerpt comes from Psalms for All Seasons, commenting on Psalm 138:

Psalm 138 is a psalm of thanksgiving and trust.

Its focus moves from the past, offering thanks for answered prayer (v. 3), to the present, testifying about God’s continued presence in the midst of difficulty (v. 7), to the future, expressing confidence in God’s purposes (v. 8).

Like Ps. 113, it depicts God as exalted, deeply concerned for the lowly (v. 6), and distant from the arrogant (v. 6).

A prayer for reflection:

We lift our hearts in thankful praise to you, O Lord,
for you do not forsake the work of your hands,
but you continue to redeem and restore your creation
through your Son, Jesus Christ, our living Lord.
By your Spirit, enable us to fulfill your purpose in our lives
and, in so doing, to discover true joy. Amen.
