Lectionary Reflection for the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

This excerpt comes from Psalms for All Seasons, commenting on Psalm 19:

Psalm 19 is a poetic masterpiece that celebrates God’s mighty creation (vv. 1-6) and life-giving law (vv. 7-11) as the basis for a humble and faithful piety (vv. 12-14).

It celebrates both modes of God’s revelation—through creation and through the written Word—and describes the fitting response to this twofold gift.

Its poignant images (the eloquent heavens, the racing sun, the honeysweet law) are especially memorable.

Prayer for reflection:
Amazing God, your glory is revealed in your creation and law,
and your love is revealed in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
You have freed us from sin and death.
You have given us wisdom and joy.
Now, by the power of your Spirit,
make our words and thoughts worthy offerings of praise.
We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
