The January Series: Kevin Schut on “Of Games and God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games”

Don’t miss Brazos Press author Kevin Schut speaking today for Calvin College’s The January Series on “Of Games and God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games.”

His presentation can be heard live today (Monday, January 13) at 12:30 p.m. EST (11:30 a.m. CST, 10:30 a.m. MST, 9:30 a.m. PST). Click here to listen live.

Of Games and God

Video games are big business, generating billions of dollars annually. The long-held stereotype of the gamer as a solitary teen hunched in front of his computer screen for hours is inconsistent with the current makeup of a diverse and vibrant gaming community. The rise of this cultural phenomenon raises a host of questions: Are some games too violent? Do they hurt or help our learning? Do they encourage escapism? How do games portray gender? Such questions have generated lots of talk, but missing from much of the discussion has been a Christian perspective.

In his book “Of Games & God” Kevin Schut, a communications expert and an enthusiastic gamer himself, offers a lively, balanced, and informed Christian evaluation of video games and video game culture. He expertly engages a variety of issues, encouraging readers to consider both the perils and the promise of this major cultural phenomenon.

Kevin is associate professor and chair of the department of media and communication at Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. His research uses video games to investigate the intersection of communication, technology, and culture. He has published articles and chapters on video games and history, games and mythology, and evangelical involvement with video games.

Kevin was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and still cheers for the Oilers. After graduating from Calvin College, he married and taught overseas in schools for missionary kids in the Cote d’Ivoire and Hungary for three and a half years. He was overjoyed to have the opportunity to move back to Canada after grad school in Iowa (Go Hawks!) and still teach in a Christian university. He has three young daughters who love playing the Wii, PS3, and Xbox360 with him.

iGods by Craig Detweiler was reviewed by Andrew Byers for Christianity Today.

“Where he excels most notably is in his careful, well-researched portrayal of the values and motivations behind the digital technologies so tightly woven into the fabric of our lives. By tracing the formation of the iGod institutions, his book constitutes ‘an active resistance to a thoughtless embrace.’

“We’re offered a theologically informed exposé of technological influences and a cautionary reminder that our media gadgets and their makers are far from neutral. Technology shapes us. And the technology of our day is continually insinuating that newer, faster, and sleeker are superior values.”

Living into Focus by Arthur Boers was reviewed in Mockler Memo.

“In the midst of chaotic schedules and beeping smartphones is precisely where God calls us to find or create relevant, contextualized focal practices. A healthy Silicon Valley career — just like that of a Montana-based writer — requires focal practices like meditation and study, prayer groups, jogging at noon, the evening walk, the music lesson or dance group, and the household feast on weekends (at least).

“Boers never suggests that technology per se is evil, nor does he invite us all to move out into rural communes. His message, so biblical, so appropriate today, is to be thoughtful and aware and make space and time in our lives for what is truly important.”

Of Games and God by Kevin Schut was reviewed in The Artistic Theologian, a journal of ministry and arts by the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

“Schut doesn’t try to give us the final word on the morality of video games; instead, he walks the journey with the reader, attempting to apply what the Bible has to say and helping the reader build a healthy critical framework from which to approach important issues in the gaming world.

Of Games & God is a great book for the inquisitive Christian, whether a parent, pastor, or ‘gamer.'”

“How do you respond to those who believe that faith has no place in the public square at all?”

“Faith transcends politics. It should be lived out in our public life for the common good. The challenge facing people of all faiths is how we rise above political ideology and lead on moral grounds. Our public life could be improved and even transformed if our religious traditions practiced what they preached in all parts of our lives. People of all religions need to show how faith can promote, not hinder the common good.”

Nicole Baker Fulgham, author of Educating All God’s Children, was interviewed by Rachel Held Evans. Here is an excerpt:

“What would you say is the #1 thing that Christians who aren’t directly involved in education as teachers or administrators can do to help change the disparity and achievement gap within America’s public schools?

“This might surprise you, but I think Christians can have the biggest impact by becoming vocal champions of what’s possible in low-income public schools. Our society desperately needs more advocates for public schools who deeply believe in the God-given potential of every single student. If we don’t believe this type of success is possible, we will never garner the political will to enact the hard, but necessary, reforms. If we start proclaiming this belief over and over again in our communities—and then start putting our faith into action by becoming tutors, starting public school partnerships, and contacting our local, state, and national elected officials to demand change—then we’ll have a movement!”
