Of Games and GodOf Games and God by Kevin Schut received a 4.5 star review from Ted Turnau for Christianity Today

“Evangelical Christian books on video games have typically been dreary, censorious affairs. Painting with oversized brushes, concerned authors with knitted brows have warned us for decades that our children and country are going to hell in a handbasket because of these games. They have not, let us say, been all that subtle or nuanced in their assessments.

“As a ‘gamer’ myself, I have toyed with writing a book on video games, since there seemed to be a need for a balanced voice in the conversation.”

“I’m glad I never got started on that project. Kevin Schut has already written it.”

The Evolution of AdamThe Evolution of Adam by Peter Enns is a finalist in the Religion category of the 2012 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Awards.

Traditional Christian teaching presents Jesus as reversing the effects of the fall of Adam. However, an evolutionary view of beginnings doesn’t allow for a historical Adam, making evolution seem incompatible with what Genesis and the apostle Paul say about him. For Christians who accept evolution and want to take the Bible seriously, this presents a tension that endangers faith.

Peter Enns offers a way forward by explaining how this tension is caused not by the discoveries of science but by false expectations about the biblical texts. Focusing on key biblical passages in the discussion, Enns demonstrates that the author of Genesis and the apostle Paul wrote to ask and answer ancient questions for ancient people; the fact that they both speak of Adam does not determine whether Christians can accept evolution.

This thought-provoking book reconciles the teachings of the Bible with the widely held evolutionary view of beginnings and will appeal to anyone interested in the Christianity-evolution debate, including college and seminary students in science and religion courses.

Speaking of DyingSpeaking of Dying by Fred Craddock, Dale Goldsmith, and Joy V. Goldsmith was reviewed by pastor Conrade Yap.

“I am deeply grateful for this book because it shines light into a dark place where few people dare to tread. It speaks into the needs of people who struggle with the questions of death and dying.

“Above all, as it helps the Church recover her voice for speaking hope to the dying, it also illuminates ways in which pastors, preachers, leaders, and concerned believers can participate in the ministry of caring for the dying.

“Well written and researched, intelligent and practical, this book is a strongly recommended reference book for all in Christian ministry and leadership. As much as we all want to live well, we need also to learn what it means to die well. This book provides much wisdom and guidance.”

Of Games and God was also reviewed by Janelle Weibelzahl, who worked with Kevin Schut on this book.

“The reason I am so excited about the release of this book . . . is that it begins a conversation that needs to be had by Christians about video games. . . . recognizing that video games are an unavoidable and growing part of our culture, Schut invites us on a journey towards a critical understanding of the relationship between faith and games. He offers us the tools to think intelligently about games, to ask for ourselves the question, ‘How should we then live?’”

Speaking of DyingSpeaking of Dying by Fred Craddock, Dale Goldsmith, and Joy V. Goldsmith was chosen by the Academy of Parish Clergy as one of their Top 10 Books of the Year.

This book offers a critical analysis of the church’s failure to communicate constructively about dying, reminding the church of its considerable liturgical, scriptural, and pastoral resources when it ministers to the terminally ill. The authors, who have all been personally and professionally involved in end-of-life issues, suggest practical, theological bases for speaking about dying, communicating with those facing death, and preaching about dying.

They explore how dying–in baptism–begins and informs the Christian’s life story. They also emphasize that the narrative of faith embraces dying, and they remind readers of scriptural and christological resources that can lead toward a “good dying.” In addition, they present current best practices from health professionals for communication among caregivers and those facing death.

A Hobbit JourneyMatthew Dickerson, author of A Hobbit Journey, was interviewed by Pieter Collier on Tolkien Library.

Q: “There are many books written with a ‘Hobbit’ connection these days, but not many get such nice reviews, what makes your book different?”

A: “ I think I have written in an engaging way. I think I’ve asked good questions. And I think there is a nice narrative arc to my book. Each time I answer one question it leads to more questions, and eventually I think it ties together nicely. I think the book does lead to a deeper understanding of Tolkien, but also explores ideas that are important in life. . . .

“I guess if I had to boil it all down, I think maybe the key aspect of my book that makes it successful is that it does provide what you might call ‘scholarly insights’ into Tolkien’s writing that an average reading might not see or be aware of, but the book doesn’t feel too academic. It is readable.”

Speaking of Dying

Speaking of Dying by Fred Craddock, Dale Goldsmith, and Joy V. Goldsmith was reviewed by Ministry Matters.

Speaking of Dying begins with a negative critique of both the American Protestant church and the culture in which we are embedded.

“As the book progresses, however, a clear and hopeful narrative comes into view—one in which life begins, continues, and finally ends in the context of sacrament.

“Craddock, Goldsmith, and Goldsmith turn personal experience and careful research into an eminently readable book on a vitally important subject.”

A Hobbit JourneyMatthew Dickerson, author of A Hobbit Journey, wrote on “Seeing Christ in ‘The Hobbit‘” for The Huffington Post.

“Where is Christ in The Hobbit?

“This question might have caused author J. R. R. Tolkien to have fits, given his notorious distaste for allegory. Yet, some background on the celebrated creator of hobbits and the bestselling Middle-earth books suggests that there is at least some legitimacy in posing the question.

“Tolkien was a devout Catholic. While he eschewed allegory and sought to remove explicit religion from “The Lord of the Rings,” his personal letters and published essays show he considered his books to be deeply theistic, and he thought fantasy literature must convey religious truth. He was surprised that theistic aspects of his writing did not receive more notice, and he once commented that of the various biographical aspects of his life, his Christian faith was the only significant fact in understanding his works.

“So the broader question of whether Tolkien’s writings should be considered “Christian works” is complex. As I point out in “A Hobbit Journey,” there is no easy answer, and, depending on what one means by the question, there are some good reasons for answering yes and some for answering no.”

Spirituality and the Awakening Self by David Benner was reviewed in the October 2012 issue of The Diocesan Post, a section of The Anglican Journal.

“In a day when the world is filled with self-help books, offering advice with varying degrees of helpfulness, Benner reconnects the process of transformational change with the world’s spiritual traditions, particularly reflecting his own deep rooted-ness in the mystical tradition of Christianity.

“Benner offers a helpful corrective to some of the self-centered road maps that are popular in our individualistic culture, suggesting, ‘Ultimately transformation is not even really about me. It is about an increasing recognition of the reality of the me-in-God and the God-in-me. Self-engineered attempts at transformation are far too self-focused to truly allow my ego-self to die and my spirit-centered self to emerge.’”

God and Charles Dickens by Gary L. Colledge was reviewed by Comment Magazine

“Gary L. Colledge’s God and Charles Dickens: Recovering the Christian Voice of a Classic Author (Brazos 2012) makes the convincing case that behind each of Dickens’s novels is a consistent vision of Christ’s ministry of reconciliation. . . . This is an aspect of Dickens that we have not heard enough about this year, the 200th anniversary of his birth, neither in the public commemorations nor in the academic press.”

You can read the rest of the review here.

God and Charles Dickens was also reviewed by Gene C. Fant Jr. for The Gospel Coalition.

“Gary Colledge’s helpful work, published on the 200th anniversary of the author’s birth, urges Christian readers in particular to consider rescuing Dickens from the literary quicksand of the past. . . . Colledge, adjunct professor at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Walsh University in Canton, Ohio, proposes that Dickens’s voice is as relevant today as it was in the past, as his works address significant issues of poverty, justice, personal hypocrisy, and faith.”
